BWH: Let’s talk about the beginning of it all. What led you to the world of media and entertainment?

Brown: As a child, I understood the importance of representation. In my neighborhood, I saw black men and women who were teachers and doctors. When I created a newsletter for my church, the response was amazing. After leaving the church, I wondered how I could continue to bring positive news to the community. My thoughts went to a young man, Darrin Morris, who created a local newspaper named Cream. The newspaper showcased local individuals’ accomplishments. Each week, I saw how people couldn’t wait to see themselves in the newspaper. It hit me to continue to put out positive news, but through a magazine. At that moment, IMPACT Magazine was born.

BWH: What do you love most about what you do?

Brown: What I love most about what I do is sharing the journey of Black people! We are an amazing people with intricate stories. I’m proud to be able to tell our stories. Being a Black Woman in the publishing industry has been amazing. Everyone wants to have their stories told. With the rising use of social media, we’ve been given an opportunity to tell stories throughout the day, everyday to thousands of people. Through social media, it has taken the publication to greater heights.
